Our Activities

Proceedings of June 2nd 2012:

  • Introduction of volunteers
  • Handouts: Get Inspired Atlanta (internship projects), Positions Available (roles and responsibilities), SEWA International USA pamphlet (what is SEWA?), Previous Internship Presentation and Presentation on Bhutanese
  • Introduction of interns
  • Interns paired up with Bhutanese youth

  • Documentaries of the experiences of past SEWA volunteers

Proposals:

  • Monthly/weekly newsletter to Bhutanese community, containing upcoming events, articles covering recent events, birthday and anniversary recognition, details about various programs for those who are interested, translated version for non-English speakers, also including training Bhutanese youth to carry on the newsletter themselves
  • Cultural events for adults, i.e., senior citizens teaching their Bhutanese heritage (arts and crafts, recipes, songs, dances, etc) to the youth, women gathering for a night of bingo and Bhutanese food, each bringing her own dish
  • College entrance preparation for youth, distributing information on academic requirements, standardized testing, application process, etc, also including personalized mentoring to determine high school 4-year plan in preparation for prospective career by placing youth into groups based on their interests)
  • Youth involvement, as talented youth share their skills with other youth, i.e. young dancer holds workshops teaching the other children the basics of dance
  • Contact spreadsheet of all Bhutanese refugees, including emails (listserv) and phone numbers
  • Follow-up of internship projects, checking in with the trained youth
  • Creation of chapters at universities, especially out-of-state
  • Contact high school and university community service clubs for SEWA publicity

Recommendations:

  • Interns each take on a different individual project and follow through with it throughout the internship.

We will have our second Orientation on June 8th 2012 for the Interns who missed and we will be taking you to the Bhutanese Apartments.
