Sewa International provides after-school tutoring and homework help for refugee and immigrant youth in the underserved communities. Our mission is to address education gaps that so many children face due to cultural and language barriers. The focus is on overall development of the kids giving them all the tool required for social and academic success. At present Sewa runs after school programs at two centers Los Arcos and San Marcos. The team is also working on adding one more center this year. The goal is to help our students break the cycle of abject poverty! At present, we have more than 100 students that come to Aspire Centers to gain educational and mentorship support.
Los Arcos is predominantly a refugee community. Students are primarily in elementary school and come from diverse backgrounds, including from Bhutan, Rwanda, and Congo. The center has been operating since 2013 and more than 70 kids are enrolled in this program at present.
At San Marcos Apartment in SW Houston, our students come from immigrant backgound and face similar challenges. The San Marcos center came into operation in 2014 and more than 30 children from the ages of 5 to 12 years are enrolled in this program. In 2016, the center went from weekend sessions to after school home work help operating 5 days a week.
Our centers run all year round and we encourage youth from the community to volunteer at the centers during academic year as well as summer. Volunteers do work as mentors for the kids and can be a great influence. Please contact us if you are interested in visiting the centers.
