ASPIRE (Achieving Student Progress, Instilling Resilience, and Excellence)
|
|
The ASPIRE Program is an initiative of Sewa International, USA, started in Houston, TX, in 2012. Its mission is
to empower students intellectually, emotionally, and socially. ASPIRE provides after-school tutoring and
mentoring services for underprivileged youth in metro areas of the US. The goal of ASPIRE is on holistic
development, nurturing children with knowledge, inculcating qualities required for social and academic
success, including emotional intelligence, ensuring competence in core subjects, critical thinking, and
encouraging creativity.
Sewa Houston works in seven schools, and three Sewa-owned ASPIRE centers. It works with 100 elementary
school students and 200 middle school and high school students. Sewa Houston ASPIRE also works with the
families of ASPIRE students and provides them with Wrap Around Services (WAS) which include but are not
limited to rental assistance, livelihood assistance, and food assistance. In the San Francisco Bay Area, the
ASPIRE project directly impacted 206 students from January 2021. It included two summer classes which
offered five coding sessions.

Leandro (not his real name) is the oldest of three children in the family that emigrated from Central America before
the children were born. Dad works hard, and mom manages the home, making tamales to sell in the community.
Early on, mom realized that Leandro was different from other boys of his age. By kindergarten, he was diagnosed as
being on the Autism Spectrum, highly articulate, prone to fits of anger, and had a particular aptitude for numbers
and facts. He knew every capital city of the world. Although he did well on homework and tests, his classroom
interactions and out-of-school social activities were much less successful.
We supported the mom in connecting with the schoolteachers, counselors, and professional staff. A lot of the
child’s anger was born of frustration because of boredom in the classroom. We also connected the family to
medical and psychological resources for better support. Further testing at the end of second grade indicated the
potential for placement in a gifted program.
Mom was reluctant to transfer Leandro because he would be farther from home, and the new school and the new
environment would be unfamiliar territory. So many unknowns. We worked with the mom, connecting her with the
program suggested for Leandro. We all spent a year supporting the transition, and in fourth grade, Leandro made
the switch. The whole family made the switch. Two years later, Leandro is thriving. Challenges exist, but his future
got dotted with potential opportunities.
