Sickle Cell Elimination Mission: Together for a Healthier Tomorrow

The "Sickle Cell Elimination Mission" is a critical initiative led by Sewa International (Bharat) in partnership with Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission Hospital, aimed at addressing the devastating impact of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) on tribal communities in Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. SCD is a genetic disorder that affects red blood cells, causing severe pain, organ damage, and significantly reduced life expectancy.

In India, tribal communities such as the Kuruma, Paniya, Naikya, and Chetti in Wayanad district, Kerala, and the populations in Attappady area of Palakkad district are disproportionately affected by SCD. These communities face high morbidity and mortality rates due to the lack of awareness, early detection, and access to comprehensive medical care. The socio-economic challenges further exacerbate their plight, making it imperative to provide targeted interventions.

The Need for the Project:

High Prevalence: SCD is more common in tribal populations, leading to significant health disparities.

Lack of Awareness and Early Detection: Many tribal individuals are unaware of their condition until severe symptoms manifest.

Limited Access to Healthcare: Remote locations and inadequate healthcare infrastructure hinder timely diagnosis and treatment.

Socio-Economic Impact: SCD leads to frequent health crises, reducing the ability to work and causing financial strain on families.

Cultural and Lifestyle Factors: High rates of alcohol, tobacco, and drug use, along with poor nutrition and sanitation, aggravate the condition.

Our Mission:

We aim to raise $100,000 to implement a comprehensive strategy to combat SCD, focusing on:

Early Detection and Counselling: Conducting special medical camps and surveys in tribal communities to identify and counsel affected individuals.

Newborn Screening: Ensuring early diagnosis and intervention for newborns to manage the disease from the onset.

Comprehensive Medical Care: Providing ongoing medical treatment, including medication, pain management, and lifestyle counseling.

Rehabilitation Projects: Establishing socio-economic rehabilitation projects such as bamboo crafts and tailoring centers to provide financial support and mental well-being for SCD patients.

Health Education Programs: Promoting awareness about SCD, its symptoms, and prevention methods, alongside education on de-addiction and healthy living.

Join Us:

Your contribution can make a significant difference in the lives of many tribal families. Together, we can provide hope, improve health outcomes, and empower these communities to lead better lives. Join us in our mission to eliminate Sickle Cell Disease and create a healthier tomorrow for all.
