Uttar Pradesh Flood Relief
The monsoon rains this year, which have lingered for longer than normal, have led to flooding, crop damage, and loss of life. The Ganga is above the flood levels in at least five locations, including Varanasi, in Uttar Pradesh (UP). According to the National Emergency Response Centre (NERC) in India, flooding has affected over 1,300 villages in 22 districts following heavy rainfall, affecting 8.43 million people. Twenty-six people were choked to death in rain-related incidents in UP since August 2022. The flood waters submerged the Gonda-Barhni-Gorakhpur railway bridge in Balrampur, upsetting the movement of trains. Non-stop rainfall and high-intensity winds have also led to crop damage. Sewa International’s volunteers are helping the vulnerable residents in Uttar Pradesh, who have been badly affected. Sewa has begun relief efforts targeting to reach over ₹80 lakhs ($1 million).
