The South Bay Math Tournament (SBMT) is a math tournament founded by a group of high schoolers for the purpose of inciting passion for mathematics within kids of young ages. Each year, SBMT hosts an annual tournament that brings together elementary and middle schoolers from across the Bay Area to compete in challenging and unique mini-events. In 2018, SBMT had almost 200 participants from all over the Bay Area, ranging from 3rd to 8th graders.
At SBMT, we strive to differentiate ourselves from other math competitions by putting a focus on making it fun for the participants. Our problems are designed to go beyond textbook problems found in schools, and evoke critical thinking of how to utilize the concepts learned in school in a different way. Furthermore, we host a variety of fun math related mini-events in addition to the main competition, such as Estimathon, Rubik’s Cubes, and Escape Room.
Each year, SBMT tries to secure sponsors to help make the experience better for competitors, in addition to helping spread the awareness of opportunities to young kids. Last year, we partnered with the Art of Problem Solving, Wolfram Research Inc., and AlphaStar Academy. We have plans to expand our sponsorship opportunities this year to various other companies and organizations with similar missions as ours from across the US.
From the profits we raise from the tournament, SBMT has plans to donate it to schools and charity organizations with the goals of increasing children’s access to math education. We would love to partner with Sewa and donate to Sewa, other schools, and charities to maximize our impact on the community!
SBMT 2019 is currently scheduled to be held on Saturday, September 28th, at the Union Church of Cupertino.
